YouTuber Recommendations

For those who consume news specials, true crime, etc., this guy is basically 60 Minutes Australia, but for (mostly) YouTube/Twitch drama. Deep dives that do a good job of getting you to care about whatever he's trying to get you to care about.

[EDIT: Maybe try to keep it to 2 or 3 people a post so that you don't drown out your own cause (so to speak). Multiple posts are fine, of course. Just space them out between others.]

I enjoy long-form video game deep dives from a variety of content creators. I'm gonna cherry pick a few and drop them below and hope they reach people who don't know who they are.


Tim Rogers worked for Kotaku for a long while, but I never really followed him until I saw this review for FFVIIR. It is 3 hours long and it's time well spent.


Sphere Hunter covers mostly survival horror games. She has a pleasant voice and uses it to give overviews of the games she covers.


Grim Beard covers a lot of semi-obscure stuff, tending toward horror-themed adventure games and the like. This was the video that first got me into his content, and it basically saved me from ever having to play Harvester so that's a bonus.


For a less gaming-related channel, maybe check out Scaredy Cats? They have humorous takes on horror movies. They're not all as cheesey as Phantasm, but this one is pretty recent because Phantasm is a summer movie. Everyone knows this.

Super Bunnyhop creates some incredible feature pieces in video form, as well as being a straight-up game journalist in the most classic sense. I can't recommend him and his content enough.


Next up, NoClip and Danny O'Dwyer produce the best documentaries/behind the scenes look at video games in the business. He's a huge inspiration to me and one of the reasons I wanted to pursue a role in video editing/production within games media since watching him at GameSpot and his old show "The Point" (which I also recommend).


Old computers, old tech, oddware, fun reviews -- if that's up your alley, then you'll love LGR.


Lastly, Infinite Backlog! My humble beginnings were creating this channel with my good friend Sam from New Zealand (who still runs the channel and uploads video reviews frequently to this day). Originally named "Cynical Bastards Play" (because we started out doing terrible let's plays), eventually, we moved into video reviews, and I began sharing them along with written versions in the C-blogs. Good times.

It would be gauche of me to plug myself here, so I'm just going to point to my favorite Youtuber to watch, Red Bard.
She's studying to be a professional historian, and on her channel she turns that same skillset toward researching and breaking down bizarre topics related to anime and video games. Done some genuinely impressive work in her longer videos, like the ones about Gaia Online and My Immortal, but I'm gonna link a shorter one here:

For in depth VG analasys I love me some Noah Caldwell Gervais. The guy trudges through entire franchises (long and short), and his writing is both insightful and poignant. He can turn a phrase like few other 'tubers I can think of. Also his vids are long, which is perfect for slow days at work when I'm not listening to audiobooks. Dude did 4 fucking hours on RDR.


For some diversity (white, but non-binary), I like Curio's takes on a lot of their stuff. They usually come at the media from a very leftist POV, so fair warning to folks who don't like thinking about their games from socio-political perspectives.

I've got a few more, but I think I'll wait and see if other people have some of the same subs as I do.

Seconded. I purposefully avoided more politically themed channels and videos in my recommendations though. Those subjects get messy and I'd hate to do that to this thread.

Everything is political. Because the world is political.
Hyperbole (albeit only barely so) aside, like half the channels I follow are at least a little bit politically-charged. Youtube in particular is such a hotbed of gross crypto-alt-right nonsense, especially in video game-related spheres, that I need to treat every new YT'er I find as extremely suspect until they prove trustworthy. Which tend to be a much faster process if they're, you know, open and up-front about their political leanings. Really sucks that this is where we are...

I doubt many here are into YouTube/Twitch drama as much as I am (I need my sauce rocks off, dammit), but Rich here's just a cool guy. He's currently the only person I'm a "member" (heh, member) of on YouTube. He also covers gaming about as much as the former two.

Was taken aback because a couple people even threw him 100 bucks during his birthday livestream yesterday evening. Came out as bisexual to him (just to sort of test his politics) and he was super chill about it. I know it's a low bar, but it did reinforce my membership.

He also takes no shit.



I'm sure most here are familiar with SkillUp, but he's one of the best and most in-depth reviewers out there and puts out said reviews (at times) within the the same breath as most other outlets.
