I expected a Souls version of Tenchu with a bit of samurai action from it, I got that. But it sounds like what you might have been looking for in it might be fulfilled by Ghost of Tsushima. Are you excited for that one?

Every game should have difficulty settings. If a game's thesis is "you're going to fail and overcome your failure", then failing three times versus failing twenty times isn't making your point any less effective, it's just less padding.

I beat Sekiro, but it did not scratch the itch, that's for sure. Its has a lack of playstyle options compared to all the other Form games, and you have to play a parry build. Not my style at all. And the last boss can go fuck off somewhere in a ditch and die

idk, I'm in a weird place on the whole difficulty level thing with From games.

fanboys get annoying with their defense of the difficulty curve, but I'm someone who drastically changed their opinion on From games because I learned and adapted to them.

There's a lot of room for improvement (hitboxes and tracking are a constant issue in every single Soulsborne game) but learning how to adapt to the game without having to turn down a difficulty slider is super satisfying.

They at least have some semblance of balance compared to the hardest modes on other games that feel like they were never actually playtested.

That said, I'm really not at all opposed to providing an easy mode to make the games more accessable. Git Guders can go cry about it.

Breath of the Wild was a chore to play through. The weapon durability, exploring the open world with limited stamina, the lackluster shrines, 4 'meh' dungeons, and an ubisoft collect-a-thon to get hearts and weapons all make me not want to go back to it. No unique items that you get from dungeons, just the main ones that you are forced to get an hour into the game.
I hope the next one has a way to repair weapons at the very least. It was well thought out, but playing it isn't enjoyable.

I feel you, I've spent about 50hours on it and felt that I was getting nowhere. I do still think it's a great game, one that I should get back on (maybe even restart) before the inevitable sequel comes, it's just not something I could just jump in and out of on a whim

Actually on the topic of difficulty I want to point everyone's attention to a Souls like on Steam Early Access called Little Witch Nobeta (mini review it's really bloody good, and despite it's cute aesthetics it is unironically the best dark souls clone behind an actual From Software game. It's what Code Vein wishes it was as Anime Souls). It's pretty hard but so well designed that it doesn't feel unfair which is what alot of Souls likes fail at. And guess what, it has an easy mode (renamed to standard mode in recent patch while normal mode got renamed to Advanced which is wierd but ok).

The Witcher 3 is not a great game. It's a mediocre game with great writing.

The combat is simplistic and janky. Even on Death March difficulty I was able to make it through the whole game just hitting attack->dodge->attack->dodge over and over. I eventually started taking quests that were 10+ levels above me just to see if I could beat them, and it turns out I could. I think I was able to get to around 15 levels below the recommended before I finally got stuck.

Which brings me to my next point, there is usually no real reward in most quests or exploration other than seeing where the story goes. Since you are not allowed to use equipment that is higher level than you, taking on any challenge just results in getting equipment you can't use. Even worse, that equipment never becomes useful because by the time you reach a high enough level to use it, you already have Witcher gear from 4 levels ago which surpasses it. By the end of the game I had a ridiculous collection of weapons and armor that I never even used once.

Along with that, since you're stuck using weapons at your level, fighting enemies higher than you becomes aggressively tedious. The damage that you deal out becomes severely limited to the point that you will lose all of your weapon durability on a single enemy because it takes so many hits to kill. This is the same kind of naked level-gating that games like Assassin's Creed Odyssey use. You progress is artificially gated not by interesting challenges, but just by making the enemies so tedious to defeat that you'd rather not go through the hassle.

To me those factors basically defeat the appeal of exploring an open world, because there isn't any compelling gameplay or exploration to be found, just artificial level-gating and useless equipment.

The only thing that saved it for me was the writing, and even there I am referring specifically to the side quests and DLC. The main story was a snooze-fest for me. Geralt is the most boring character in the whole game world; I would have preferred to be any other character but him.

tldr, TW3 has so many flaws that I don't see how anyone can claim that its one of the greatest RPGs of all time. It doesn't mean that people can't enjoy it (I loved FF7:R even though it is a flawed game), but objectively I think it has legitimate design issues.

Couldn't agree more. I would add that the fact that Geralt has recovered his memory made me like the game a little less. In the first 2 games the player had much more freedom to build Geralt's personality. On The Witcher 3 though, you can alter a lot of the story, but Geralt is basically the same.

This summed up my thoughts on the game as well. We're a rare breed. I don't dislike the game though, there are things I genuinely liked about it. But overall, yes, it's an absolute chore to play. I also think it's the first Zelda game I've played that not only doesn't have an excellent soundtrack, but in fact it has a pretty lousy one.

Now, that said...
I didn't like Nier Automata much. Yeah, 2B's ass is nice, but the gameplay is repetitive, the environments are bland as hell, the sidequests are boring as hell and the big ending that everyone lost their minds over is a plot device I saw coming in one form or another and have seen the idea done better in other media. The plot is all over the place and comes off pretentious as hell in thinking it's this awesomely profound, life changing experience when in reality it felt like overwrought, convoluted typical anime weeb shit. This is of course to me, of course.

I actually enjoyed Nier Automata's story and experimental storytelling, but the rest of the game? Not so much. The combat is mediocre, burdened by the fact you can carry an absurd amount of healing items and use them anytime. So there's really no difficulty, unless you get oneshot which is not cool. Also, as you mentioned, the sidequests are boring, not to mention the open world structure with those resources you have to gather. Awful shit.

Here goes my unpopular opinion beyond those I agree with above: Ni no Kuni is a trash fire. The plot is childish and dumb. The characters' writing makes me feel like I'm watching the Pokemon anime. The combat is boring. Your AI partners are dumb and die should any sort of challenge present to them. I loathe every minute I spent playing that crap. I'm not even kidding. I was so excited to play it, seeing all those 9 reviews, but there's nothing there besides a generic, dumb JRPG, with an awesome art design and OST. This is one of the games that broke my trust in the opinion of others. I can't FATHOM playing Ni no Kuni and not seeing these absurd flaws. You can like the game, there's nothing wrong with that, but, when you're writing a review, try to at least visualize some technical and objective aspects.
Dark Cloud 2 is all of the above, but without the the astounding art and sound design.

Avatar, the last Airbender is a kids show without any consistency between episodes, due to the changing directors and writers. The jokes are dumb and for kids. Every 2-3 episodes there's a massive plot hole. In summary, it's just some kids show with nice world building concepts that people have nostalgia for. And before someone tells me that I shouldn't have such high standards for a work aimed at kids, I should point that one thing is to make something for everyone to enjoy, the other is treating children and pre-adolescents as dumb.

I actually agree pretty well with both of your last points as well. I never understood the love for Avatar back when it was new, and I don't understand it again now that it's been risen from the dead. Ni No Kuni was kind of charming to me, but gameplay wise I think it sucked.

Oh this is going to be fun.

1. The hype monster is real, and most gamer's (and reviewers) are simply unable to give constructive criticism on a high profile game that just released and shouldn't be declaring anything as definitive for at least a month later.

2. On a related note, User Scores are infinitely more telling of a game's true quality than Pro Reviewer's as Users have no financial or business access incentives to skew their opinion, and if there is a mass bombing of a review, it can reveal something the dev is doing that others may not be reporting on (see quality, DLC, Pricing practices).

3. FF7 remake was an inconsistent expanded demo of amazing potential wrapped in awful low quality textures and fetch quests. If and when the game is finished, it will resemble nothing like what people originally envisioned and all will be a little wiser going forward.

4. How come noone ever questions how many female or minority employees or devs work at Nintendo?

5. I have never seen the appeal of Kingdom Hearts, be it the children's characters or unbearably melodramatic dialogue and story, I don't know who it is made for.

I started listening to Alkaline Trio for the first time since middle school and I really don't like Dan Andriano's voice.

Idk if that's an unpopular opinion or not. I haven't followed them since the days of THUG and listening to the soundtrack I downloaded with one of those shady file sharing services that gave your PC viruses.

Some aspects of DmC were definitely childish, but it was a solid entry, gameplay wise. I didn't even mind the plot. DMC has never been Shakespeare, it's like porn, you just need something to get you into the main action.
